Sewing
I first learned to sew when I was around five or six years old, watching my mom sew pillowcases for our local Children’s Hospital. I vividly remember telling her I wanted to make a skirt, and she taught me the art of following a pattern. Together, we created my first sewing project. Since then, I’ve been hooked on sewing, even bringing my sewing machine to college.
Recently, I’ve become into thrift flipping clothes I find at flea markets and thrift stores. I transform these items into new and unique pieces that I can sell on Depop or at my own flea market stands. I believe it truly takes a creative vision to understand how to repurpose an item’s purpose, and this vision is what excites me about sewing.
I also must admit, I’m way too easily influenced by Pinterest, and I often find myself making many of the things I see on the app. Recently, I’ve decided to start on a new project: crocheting together a bunch of soda can tops to create a mesh fabric that will eventually be transformed into a bottle tap purse.
Racing Vintace Cars
My mom and I have been involved in vintage car racing for the past four years. She inherited a 1931 model A from her grandparents in 2019 competed in the Great Race with her father. After that, she decided we should try our hand at it and participate in the race the following year in a 1964.5 Ford Mustang.
While there are many car rallying and racing competitions across the United States, my mom and I compete in the Great Race, a 2500-mile time-insurance rally that spans (around) nine of the states every summer. To prepare for this annual race, we practice with other local teams, learning new techniques and improving our calculations of speed changes and various formulas required in the rallying process.
